So — what, exactly, is a messenger bot?
A messenger bot is a small piece of software that sends and receives messages inside a chat app on your behalf. It reads what someone writes, decides what to reply, and answers — often instantly, and often without a human ever seeing the conversation. If you have ever typed "track order" into a shop's Facebook page and received a tidy little card with your shipping status, you have talked to one.
The "messenger" part is where the bot lives: WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram DMs, Telegram, a website chat bubble. The "bot" part is the logic — a script, a flow chart, or increasingly a language model — that decides what happens next.
A messenger bot is nothing more than a set of rules that reads messages and writes them back. Everything else is decoration.
What is new is not the idea. Automated chat has existed since ELIZA in 1966. What changed recently is access: the major messaging platforms opened APIs, no-code tools made bot-building visual instead of programmatic, and large language models turned "decides what to reply" from a brittle keyword match into something closer to actual understanding.
